Ameritopia: The Unmaking of American
We all would agree with Levin’s analysis in which he concludes that America’s success is based on the results of our philosophy of liberty, and our resistance to tyranny. Succumbing to such a fate would ultimately lead to the “intellectual bankruptcy and dishonesty” which will ultimately lead to the destruction of America. Levin discusses this in detail during the first part of Ameritopia, in which he reviews historical figures such as Thomas More, Plato, and Karl Marx. His emphasis is to illustrate the methods, and similarities in which each promoted their values and their idea of an ideal society and how those ideals correlate to tyranny. The overbearing theme for each ideal society included centralized government, in which manipulates the citizens through persuasion, mistruths, and coercion.
In the second part of Ameritopia Levin illustrates how famous individuals such as john Locke, Charles de Montesquie, and Alex de Tocqueville introduced liberty to counter tyranny and it’s subsequent results. He stressed the importance of autonomy, free-will, God given right, and the pursuit of happiness to combat tyranny.
In closing, he urges American to resist a Utopian tyrant ridden society and return to a culture of liberty.
Ameritopia is truly a must read for every citizen of this nation, and should be a requirement in every high school in the country. Ameritopia is a refreshing looking at a method of thinking which is longing to be resurrected.
